Tourism leaders around the world are eager to attract LGBT+ travelers, who have been found to spend around twice as much as the average traveler. Shintaro Koizumi, LGBT+ chief executive of Out Japan Co. in Tokyo sees this first-hand in his business, conducting seminars and other programs to help corporate clients cater to LGBT+ customers.
“A same-sex couple is a double-income one and has more money to spend,” Koizumi observed. LGBT+ tourists are also more likely to post on social media and to revisit destinations that they enjoyed.
As the private sector and international pressure continue to push Japan towards LGBT+ rights, the benefit to the tourism industry could be important in driving progress.
