Businesses and LGBT+ rights advocates push for marriage equality in Japan

Recent months have seen a push for progress as Japan works to meet the anti-discrimination standards set by the Olympic Charter ahead of the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government signed an ordinance banning discrimination based on sexual orientation earlier this month. The ordinance was the first of its kind in Japan and signals significant progress, but LGBT+ rights advocates see an opportunity for more.

Importantly, the push for LBGT+ rights is beginning to gain momentum in the private sector as well, a key precursor to marriage equality in other countries.

Deena Fidas, Human Rights Campaign director of the Workplace Equality Program emphasizes the importance of pushing for marriage equality.

“The world’s eyes will be on Japan in 2020,” said Fidas, noting that the event is “an opportunity for Japan to show that it is joining the broader global community that embraces equality and fairness from the public sector, the private sector and civil society.”
