Vermont Democrats made history by nominating the country’s first openly transgender gubernatorial candidate. Hallquist is one of a record-breaking 43 openly transgender candidates running for political office in this year’s midterm elections, and represents the first to win a major party nomination for a statewide office.

Annie Parker, president and CEO of the LGBTQ Victory Fund, called her nomination a “defining moment in the movement for trans equality.”
Hallquist will run against Republican incumbent Phil Scott in the November 6 general election.
