At the prompting of Glaad, the global measurement company Nielsen has released a new statistic that represents its first effort to provide a snapshot into the viewing habits of LGBT+ people, called the same-sex spouse household rating.
While some shows like “Game of Thrones” rank similarly for the general population and same-sex households, certain shows see significant discrepancies between same-sex households and the general population. “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and its spinoff “Untucked” ranked 285th and 359th most-viewed in the cable ratings for the week of April 15, garnering only a few hundred thousand viewers. When measured for same-sex households, however, the show ranked 3rd and 9th most-viewed.
Advertisers and television producers may find the new measurement a very valuable tool.
