Grindr, Chinese-owned gay dating app, to sell by 2020

Under an agreement with U.S. officials, Grindr, the Chinese-owned gay dating app, is set to sell by 2020, a move prompted by U.S. government concerns. Following its acquisition of Grindr in January 2018, Beijing Kunlun Tech Co. has been in conversation with Cfius about the app. If Kunlun is unable to sell Grindr by June 2020, the app will be signed over to a trustee in agreement with Cfius.

The company announced that it reached an agreement prohibiting the company from accessing information about Grindr’s users and requires the sale of the app before June 2020. The national security agreement was reached with the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S., which vets overseas acquisitions of American businesses for risks to national security.
