Debate over LGBT+ rights may diminish the EEOC

If nominations for 3 Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) seats don’t make it through the Senate by the end of the year, the EEOC will lose quorum in January. This would limit the agency’s power considerably, leaving them with no power to enact new policies, take on important lawsuits, or spend significantly.

The nomination delay is centered on Democrat Chai Feldblum’s nomination for a third term. Feldblum is the EEOC’s first openly gay commissioner, and Republican senators blocking the nomination cite her perceived bias towards LGBT+ rights over religious rights. Her nomination delay is in turn delaying two of Trump’s Republican nominees.
