Wearing a rainbow pride symbol in China is increasingly dangerous, as the government cracks down on LGBT+ rights demonstrations. Those with anti-LGBT+ sentiments seem to be emboldened by this governmental shift, with several known acts of violence in the past year.
In May, two women were brutally beaten in Beijing by art district security guards for wearing rainbow badges. At a Dua Lipa concert in Shanghai, fans waving rainbow flags were dragged out of the arena and beaten outside.
When a local state-run media outlet asked a staff member of the Beijing Art District where the two women were beaten about the incident, they said “wearing a rainbow badge is illegal to me, and they, the homosexuals, have distorted sexual orientation, it is terrifying.”
