New U.S. proposal opens up potential for LGBT+ discrimination

A new Trump Administration proposal targeting nondiscrimination protections could change the future of funding for health and social welfare organizations.

The proposed rule would allow organizations to receive federal funds even if they discriminate in their services. While the proposal is considered, the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will stop enforcing existing regulations prohibiting grantees from discriminating based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

This rule would affect a broad range of federally funded programs, including adoption and foster care agencies, making it an injustice to child welfare in addition to LGBT+ protections.
