Second Lady Karen Pence is returning to teach art at a private Christian elementary school, where she taught for 12 years while her husband was a member of Congress. Immanuel Christian School requires that employees pledge not to engage in or condone “homosexual or lesbian sexual activity” or “transgender identity,” and that they believe “the term ‘marriage’ has only one meaning; the uniting of one man and one woman.”
Mrs. Pence has faced backlash for her affiliation with the anti-LGBT+ school, particularly as Second Lady with taxpayer funded services and benefits.
