IBM, Business Roundtable call on Congress to pass the Equality Act

IBM CEO Ginni Rometty wrote a letter on behalf of the Business Roundtable calling on Congress to pass the Equality Bill. The Business Roundtable represents over 200 CEOs of leading U.S. companies, with a combined 15 million employees. This letter represents the strongest and most high-profile policy stance the group has taken thus far.

The Equality Bill would extend existing federal civil rights law protections to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. The bill has bipartisan and business support, but is expected to face challenges in the Republican-controlled Senate.

“As employers, America’s leading companies know that our economy works best when our employees can be who they are, without fear of bias, discrimination, or inequality – in the workplace or in their communities,” writes Rometty, who heads the Business Roundtable’s education and workforce committee.
