Will 2022 Gay Games in Hong Kong push Asia to welcome LGBT+ tourists?

With few exceptions, Asian governments remain conservative on the LGBT+ front, with 8 countries still criminalizing same-sex sexual activity. The 11th Annual Gay Games in 2022 will mark the first of the Games to be hosted in an Asian city, and – barring progress in the next 4 years – the first of the Games to be hosted in a city without legal recognition of same-sex partnerships.

LGBT+ travel is worth $200 billion globally, and continues to grow at a much higher rate than travel overall. Thailand has already set the example by branding itself as a “kingdom open to every possible shade under the rainbow.”

Activists hope that the Gay Games will push Asia towards acceptance, both through increased visibility for LGBT+ Asians, and through the demonstrated economic clout of the LGBT+ market.
