The Trump administration has announced a global effort to end the criminalization of homosexuality, led by openly LGBT+ U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell.
The move has been met with widespread skepticism in light of the Trump administration’s history of anti-LGBT+ policies, and given the administration’s vocal criticism of Iran, despite ignoring human rights violations of U.S. Allies in the region. Trump has drawn criticism particularly for his staunch defense of Saudi Arabia (where homosexuality is also punishable by death) in light of international outrage over the monarchy’s recent human rights violations.
NBC News reports that the U.S. embassy will be flying LGBT+ activists from across Europe into Berlin for a strategy dinner.
