This week: George Santos and the return of RuPaul’s Drag Race amidst right-wing agitation

Here’s what’s been trending on social this past week:

Congressman George Santos arrived at the US Capitol this week and was immediately inundated by reporters questioning his alleged litany of lies about his background and experience. Video circulating on social media showed the legislator from New York walking into dead ends in Capitol corridors, hesitating to enter his office, and sitting alone on the House floor – ignored by his colleagues. Santos faces investigations from state, federal, and international authorities as the district attorney’s office in Nassau County questions his misrepresentations during his election, US attorneys investigate his finances, and Brazilian police reopen a 2008 inquiry against him for cashing fraudulent checks.

Fans of RuPaul’s Drag Race are eagerly awaiting the premiere of Season 15, which airs on MTV on Friday, January 6th. The new season comes as right-wing agitators such as the Proud Boys continue to demonize and intimidate drag queens nationwide. The NYPD, who have been investigating anti-LGBTQ vandalism against gay bars, a slew of murders of LGBTQ+ nightlife patrons, and hate crimes against city council member Erik Bottcher, recently came under fire for assisting the Proud Boys in committing fare evasion as they departed an anti-drag protest. Fare evasion is a crime that normally warrants a $100 fine and is routinely enforced by undercover officers.
