The United States 2020 Census will ask couples living in the same household to define their relationship as “same-sex” or “opposite sex” – a major step for the country’s Census Bureau to better account for the gay and lesbian couples in the US. The data will be used to better plan and fund government programs that serve families.
The Census Bureau had previously scuttled tentative plans to include other questions pertaining to sexual orientation or gender identity, meaning that it will not attempt to count the number of LGBT+ individuals in the country overall – just those who are in same-sex relationships.
