Surprising observers, Costa Rica elects pro-LGBT+ candidate to Presidency

Center-left candidate Carlos Alvarado will be the next president of Costa Rica, winning a huge victory over Fabricio Alvarado Muñoz, a pastor whose key campaign messaging included opposition to gay marriage.

Alvarado, a former labor minister who has supported LGBT+ rights and the pan-American human rights treaty which provided legal protection to same-sex couples, will need to urgently address the country’s fiscal deficit to prevent any more credit rating downgrades.

Alvarado plans to introduce new “fiscal rules” to curtail more debt and enact new tax and spending measures. In his victory speech, he called for lawmakers to begin debating the fiscal reform bill.
