Russian President Vladimir Putin supports investigation of human rights abuses against gay men in Chechnya

Russian President Vladimir Putin, responding to his government’s human rights ombudsman Tatyana Moskalkova’s request, will ask law enforcement officials to investigate reports of gay men being rounded up, tortured, and in some cases killed in the semi-autonomous Republic of Chechnya.

Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta first reported on the abuses in April, but Chechen and Russian officials have both thus far denied that they’d taken place.

The Associated Press reports that Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov says that the republic’s officials and police will cooperate with the ombudsman’s investigation.
