The White House has appointed a new LGBT liaison, Raffi Freedman-Gurspan. She will be the first trans person to serve in that role, which was established by President Bill Clinton in 1995. The role was not staffed during the Bush administration.
Freedman-Gurspan will serve as the Outreach & Recruitment Director for Presidential Personnel and Associate Director for Public Engagement. She joined the administration in the Office of Presidential Personnel in 2014.
Before joining the administration, she led the National Center for Transgender Equality’s racial and economic justice initiative. She also worked as a staffer in the Massachusetts House of Representatives.
