Publication of Japanese magazine Shincho 45 suspended in response to anti-LGBT+ articles

Japanese magazine Shincho 45 will effectively fold after publishing a series of anti-LGBT+ articles, beginning with junior lawmaker Mio Sugita’s controversial editorial labeling the LGBT+ community as “unproductive” in terms of childbirth.

The magazine continued with several articles defending her claim, including a contribution from conservative commentator Eitaro Ogawa equating LGBT+ identity with a “sexual preference” on par with sadism, masochism, fetishization, and non-consensual groping.

Shinchosha Publishing Co. president Takanobu Sato suspended the magazine’s publication and publicly denounced the articles as demonstrating “outrageous prejudice,” promising to review the editorial systems of company publications.
