North Carolina’s Governor-elect is working vigorously to repeal the “bathroom bill”

North Carolina Governor elect Roy Cooper has been assured by Senate Leader Phil Berger and House Speaker Tim Moore that House Bill 2, which requires people to use public restrooms based on the sex on their birth certificates, will be overturned.

The announcement followed a unanimous vote at the Charlotte City Council to rescind the LGBT nondiscrimination law it passed earlier this year. That legislation provoked state lawmakers to pass HB2; the Associated Press reports that the council’s rescindment of the law is contingent on state legislators repealing House Bill 1 by December 31st.

“Full repeal will help to bring jobs, sports and entertainment events back and will provide the opportunity for strong LGBT protections in our state,” Cooper said in a statement.
