LGBT+ Facebook users were targeted with ads for conversion therapy

LGBT+ Facebook users reported being targeted with anti-LBGT+ ad content, including promotion of conversion therapy. Those who used the “Why am I seeing this ad?” query received a response indicating that the Facebook team noticed they were “interested in gender issues.”

This is not Facebook’s first issue with LGBT+ targeted ads; last year the anti-LGBT+ group Anchored North was found to have been paying the tech company to target their ads to LGBT+ users. Most alarmingly, some of those ads were disguised as pro-LGBT+ content, with one particular conversion therapy video posted under the name “Love is Love,” accompanied by a rainbow flag thumbnail.

Facebook removed the posts after an investigation revealing a flaw in the targeting algorithm.
