Lawsuit represents next phase of battle for gender neutral passports in the U.K.

Christie Elan-Cane is a gender-neutral activist who has fought for transgender equality for 25 years.

This week, their lawyers will challenge the United Kingdom’s Home Office to provide gender-neutral, or ‘X’ passports, for UK citizens.

X stands for unspecified. Since July more than 40 MPs have signed a motion in favor of gender-neutral passports.

Out Leadership member company, Clifford Chance, is providing pro bono assistance in the case.

Currently, ten countries offer citizens a gender-neutral travel document; countries including Australia, Denmark, Germany, Malta, New Zealand, Pakistan, India, Ireland, and Nepal have a third category besides male and female.
