HRW has called the police raid of “suspected lesbians” in West Java’s Tugu Jaya Village a violation of the women’s rights to privacy, non-discrimination, and basic due process. Police responded to complaints from local Islamic youth groups and religious leaders, and forced up to a dozen women to relocate, without a sound legal basis.
The women’s personal information was also recorded by government officials.
So far this year LGBT+ people in Indonesia have been targeted in home raids lacking sufficient legal basis on four occasions.
