Gay dating app receives investment from the Chinese government

Launched in 2012, Blued is a Chinese based gay social app that now boasts 15 million users worldwide. The app has announced that it has been presented with an eight-digit strategic funding arrangement from the investment arm of The Beijing News, a state-backed newspaper group. Historically, Blued has always used their online platform to spread knowledge and create a well needed safe space in China’s gay community and many hope that the state’s recent actions indicate that acceptance for the Chinese LGBT+ community is spreading from the virtual world to the real world.

A representative from the investment arm of The Bejing News told Technode that Blued’s expanding globalization initiatives and their growth in live streaming, e-commerce, gaming, healthcare, and entertainment were the main reasons for the investment. The Beijing-based app now supports 13 languages and has offices in Thailand, Vietnam, and the U.K. Blued has also made a strategic investment with Hornet, a US dating app, with hopes of building share in North American and Latin American markets.
