France eyes legalizing assisted reproduction for lesbians in 2018

Marlene Schiappa, French junior minister for gender equality, has announced that extending assisted reproduction rights to lesbians and single women is “a matter of social justice” and will be likely to be legislated next year.

Current law requires gay women with sufficient funds to travel outside the country for artificial insemination while women who do not have the same financial means cannot.

French law still restricts artificial insemination using donated sperm to heterosexual couples. In June, the national ethics committee said it supports the changing the current law.
