FIFA has fined the football associations of five Latin American countries for their fans’ anti-LGBT chanting in World Cup qualifying matches.
The Football Federation of Chile was fined around $70,000 for fans’ inappropriate behavior at four separate games. Argentina, Mexico, Peru, and Uruguay were each fined $20,000. Supporters of the countries’ national teams engaged in what FIFA described as “insulting and discriminatory chants.”
An investigation into “apparent homophobic chants” by supporters of the national team of Honduras continues.
