Facebook study finds that LGBT users in the US are coming out on the platform at increasing rates

A new study from Facebook’s data science division shows that users in the US who identify as LGBT are coming out on the platform at an increasing rate. The rate is set to triple compared to last year. Facebook defines “coming out” as a user who has updated their profile to express same-gender interest or one who has specified a custom gender.

More than 26 million people changed their Facebook profile photos to display a rainbow filter in the days following the Supreme Court’s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges.
