The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has announced that it interprets the provision of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act that protects against discrimination on the basis of sex as extending to LGBT+ people, clarifying its position in response to a request from Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE).
The CFPB joins the Department of Justice and the Department of Education in clarifying its interpretation of the term “sex” in pre-existing statutes and thereby extending protections to LGBT+ people.
LGBT+ advocates have long claimed that the LGBT+ community faced discrimination from lenders.
