California becomes the first state to recognize being “nonbinary” as a third gender option

Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill making California the first state in the nation to allow its citizens to identify as gender “nonbinary” on state-issued identity documents, including driver’s licenses and birth certificates.

The Gender Recognition Act will also make the process for obtaining legal gender changes simpler in two key ways: people who wish to change their gender will no longer need to appear in person in court, or obtain a note from their doctor.
