Athlete Ally severs ties with Martina Navratilova over transphobic comments

Athlete Ally, an organization focused on LGBT+ inclusion in sports, has removed Martina Navratilova from her roles as board advisor and ambassador in light of transphobic comments.

In a column titled “The rules on trans athletes reward cheats and punish the innocent,” the openly lesbian tennis great characterized trans women as men who “decide to be female.” Navratilova went even farther, calling trans inclusion in competitive sports “insane and cheating.”

This was not Navratilova’s first statement on transgender athletes that drew backlash; in December she tweeted: “You can’t just proclaim yourself a female and be able to compete against women. There must be some standards, and having a penis and competing as a woman would not fit that standard.”

“Trans women athletes aren’t looking to take over women’s sport,” Athlete Ally said in a statement. “They are women and want to compete in the sport they love, just as any other athlete would.”
