American big businesses overwhelmingly support LGBT+ rights, despite local laws

Large corporations and business giants are on the cutting edge in terms of attitudes towards diversity and inclusion, often surpassing small and mid-size businesses, D Magazine argues.

Texas is the largest U.S. state that does not have laws prohibiting discrimination against the LGBT+ community. According to a survey by the Small Business Majority, 28% of small business owners surveyed said that they believe they should be able to deny goods or services to LGBT+ customers because of religious objections. Conversely, all 20 of North Texas’ largest companies have employee policies protecting LGBT+ employees, customers, and clients.

University at Buffalo Professor Michael Boucai notes that because large corporations intend to do business nationally, they need uniform policies: “They know if the want to attract LGBT talent in New York, they need to have these sorts of protections.”
