50 CEOs from influential energy sector oppose Texas “bathroom bill”

The CEOs of 50 businesses based in Houston, largely from the energy sector – among them BP, Chevron, Dow and Exxon – have sent a letter to Texas Governor Greg Abbot opposing the “bathroom bill” he supports.

“We support diversity and inclusion, and we believe that any such bill risks harming Texas’ reputation and impacting the state’s economic growth and ability to create new jobs,” they wrote. “Any bill that harms our ability to attract top talent to Houston will inhibit our growth and continued success — and ultimately the success of our great state.”

Governor Abbott called Texas legislators back to the Capitol for a special summer session; the bathroom legislation is seen as one his key motivations for having done so.

The future of the legislation is unclear, given strong opposition from the Republican leadership in the House. One of the bills has already easily passed in the Senate.
