Workplaces in India take steps to promote LGBT+ inclusion

After positive Supreme Court judgements and the decriminalization of homosexuality in India, employers are taking steps to be more accommodating towards the LGBT+ community.

The Deccan Herald interacted with LGBT+ professionals employed in corporate jobs to understand how these advancements have impacted their lives.

“My colleagues are not sympathetic towards me, and I like that they treat me like one of their own. I couldn’t have asked for a better place to work,” twenty-eight year old Tasvi says.

Though progress has been made, members of the community believe there is still a long way to go as mindsets need to change. 

Shubha Chacko, Executive Director of the Solidarity Foundation states, “Members of the LGBT+ community are still not understood and accepted. There are still myths about them and deep-seated prejudice.”

“People don’t know enough about sexual minorities. They miss no opportunity to mock and look down on us,” said Nithyananda, a gay sales manager at a life insurance company. “There isn’t enough awareness about this. More needs to be done to bring inclusivity,” he added.
