U.S. midterm elections bring “Rainbow Wave, signaling a cultural shift

The 2018 United States midterm elections ushered a record 161 openly LGBT+ leaders into public office. The victories signal a surge, both in LGBT+ political involvement and in (largely partisan) public support. This increased visibility and political clout for the marginalized LGBT+ community comes against a backdrop of escalating attacks on LGBT+ rights from the Trump administration.

In one key election Krysten Sinema (Arizona-D), who spoke at the Out Leadership VIP dinner in the U.S. in 2015, has made history as the first bisexual member of the U.S. senate, as well as Arizona’s first female senator. Sinema brings the number of openly LGBT+ members of congress to 10.
