Mexico under FIFA investigation over its fans’ homophobic chants

FIFA, the governing body of world soccer, has opened an investigation against Mexico over its fans’ alleged use of the homophobic chant “puto” during a 1-0 victory against Germany in the first round of this year’s World Cup.

The Mexican Football Federation has already been sanctioned for the chant in this year’s World Cup qualifying campaign – and it has gone to great lengths to appeal to fans to stop, including by asking star players to record videos against its use. Some believe the chant dates back to the early 2000s, and it’s not exclusively used during games in which Mexico’s national team plays: earlier this year, fans chanted the slur during Pride Night games at FC New York City and LA Galaxy games.

“Further updates will be communicated in due course,” said FIFA. “As proceedings are ongoing please understand we cannot comment further at this stage.”
