New government guidelines passed in the UK will make LGBT+ inclusive sex education mandatory from age 12 starting in September 2020, without previously allowed religious exemptions.
Over 100,000 people have signed a petition arguing that opting out of relationship and sex education is a “fundamental right,” and prominent figures in religious organizations have spoken out against it.
Education Secretary Damian Hinds said that sex education “must be grounded in a firm understanding and valuing of positive relationships, and respect for others, from primary age.”
