A new study takes a deep look at LGBT+ rights, country by country. Sweden was named the most LGBT-friendly country in the world for travelers, based on factors including legalized same-sex marriage, worker protection, and whether it’s considered a good place to live. Canada ranked second safest, while the United States was at number 24 – primarily because gay rights vary from state to state.
The researchers acknowledged that though not all indicators affect travelers directly, rights enshrined in law are a good overall indication of a country’s attitudes. Good guidelines to follow: “In all cases, do your research, check official government data for up-to-date news and if you feel apprehensive, consider traveling to a more LGBTQ+ friendly country.”
