Welcome to the first edition of my weekly equality news digest, Global Pulse on Equality. Every week, I will share important news, updates, and commentary about the LGBTQ+ equality movement globally.
Acknowledging past mistreatment of LGBTQ+ people. One of the big items this week was that “British L.G.B.T. Veterans Stripped of Medals Can Get Them Back”. That matters to me because I am a firm believer that for true reconciliation to happen, there is a need to acknowledge past wrongs. It reminds me of the famous ‘I Am Sorry. We Are Sorry. ‘ in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Formal Apology to Canada’s LGBTQ+ Community in 2017 which brought tears to my eyes.
All eyes on the US House of Representatives next week. The much-needed Equality Act – which Out Leadership has been championing – has languished on Mitch McConnell’s desk for several years. Well, no more as the Biden-Harris administration has committed to passing it in its first 100 days. The US House of Representatives is set to vote on the Equality Act again next week in a decisive push to protect LGBTQ+ Americans. Sen. Romney said he will oppose it. Quelle surprise.
America is back on the international scene for the global rights of LGBTQ+ people. This means we have a window of opportunity to leverage the tremendous power of US diplomacy, foreign policy but also the private sector to support change abroad. Read my take on this news here.
The 5th anniversary of the OnePulse atrocity is approaching. I’m not sure if you read that Singer Ricky Martin will be a spokesman for the OnePulse Foundation that is building a memorial and museum to honor the 49 victims who were killed at Pulse in Orlando on June 12th, 2016. We had a call with the Executive Director on Tuesday this week to see how we can support the “Outlove hate” call-to-action ahead of the anniversary.
Implementing board diversity requirements in California. The influential Silicon Valley Leadership Group is hosting a Board diversity seminar for its members next week (February 26th) at which I will speak on behalf of Out Leadership’s Quorum LGBTQ+ Board Diversity initiative. You can download our recently published LGBTQ+ Board Diversity Report here. It is part of our effort to tell companies, General Counsels and recruiters: “it is time to have a close look at LGBTQ+ candidates and we happen to have binders and binders of them” (Sen. Romney is clearly on my mind this week 😃)
A book for you to read. The long-awaited “GaYme Changer – How the LGBT+ community and their allies are changing the global economy” – the product of years of research and interviews by Jens Schadendorf is due to be released on February, 25th. The book should be an encouragement for businesses to continue their journey towards LGBTQ+ inclusion, including in the Boardroom. It also offers insight into how our efforts might be leading to a better version of capitalism. Todd will be interviewing Jens during our Out Leadership Europe Summit in March. You can use this link to register to attend the Summit.
Read an interview with our friend Brent Miller, P&G’s senior director, global LGBTQ+ equality and inclusion, who leads the company’s engagement with the LGBTQ+ community.

I am a Board Member, I am honored to serve as Secretary and Out Leadership is proud to be an official partner. This week we met with the #IDAHOBIT Working Group to discuss plans for the year around the World.
