Confirmation of EEOC Commissioner stalled due to support for LGBT+ workplace protections

The confirmation of Equal Employment Opportunity Commissioner Chai Feldblum has met opposition from socially conservative organizations and Utah Senator Mike Lee, in large part due to Feldblum’s support for LGBT+ workplace protections. Their vocal opposition has created a holdup in the confirmation process, which absent any objections could have been expedited through a unanimous consent process, which would have allowed for all four EEOC candidates to be voted on at once.

Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell has continued to delay the confirmation vote, while Senator Lee has convinced at least three other Republican Senators to join him in opposition. Trade groups are eager for the vote to take place as soon as possible so they can get to work under what would become the first Republican-majority EEOC of the Trump administration.
