The Chilean Senate passed a bill granting transgender Chileans of 14 years of age and older the right to legally change their name and gender without surgery. Advocacy groups have criticized the age restriction, but have praised the measure overall.
Chilean LGBT+ advocacy group The Movement for Homosexual Integration and Liberation called the bill a “step forward for all trans people who are older than 14-years-old, who will be able to see improvements to their quality of life with more simple ways to change their legal name and sex,” noting that it will hopefully lead to “better work, educational and familial opportunities” for trans people.
Versions of the bill have been before Chilean legislators since 2013, and received renewed attention in the wake of the Oscar-winning film “A Fantastic Woman,” which starred Chilean trans actress Daniela Vega.
