Activists hopeful that 2019 will bring conversion therapy bans

Fourteen states and the District of Columbia currently have laws prohibiting the practice of conversion therapy by licensed therapists. LGBT+ rights activists hope that at least Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts and New York will pass similar laws in the upcoming legislative session.

Increased public engagement has sparked momentum for the movement in recent months following the release of two films telling conversion therapy stories (“The Miseducation of Cameron Post” and “Boy Erased”). In conjunction with increased public interest and a wave of campaign sign-ups, the “blue wave” of the 2018 midterm elections removed political barriers in key states where progress is expected.
