Out Leadership’s Todd Sears will be having a LIVE conversation with Alphonso David, President of Human Rights Campaign (HRC), Kevin Jennings, CEO of Lambda Legal, and Sarah Kate Ellis, President & CEO of GLAAD.
Alphonso David President Human Rights Campaign (HRC)
Alphonso is the first civil rights lawyer and person of color to serve as president of HRC, the nation’s largest LGBTQ civil rights organization. He served as Chief Counsel to Governor Andrew Cuomo of NY after being Deputy Secretary & Counsel for Civil Rights to the Governor. Previously he was Special Deputy Attorney General for Civil Rights for the Office of the NY State Attorney General, Deputy Commissioner & Special Counselor at the NY State Division of Human Rights, Staff Attorney at Lambda Legal Defense & Educational Fund, and Litigation Associate at Blank Rome LLP. He began his legal career as Judicial Clerk to Clifford Scott Green, US District Court for the Eastern District of PA. An Adjunct Professor of Law at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Alphonso previously taught at Fordham University Law School. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland and Temple University School of Law.
Kevin Jennings CEO Lambda Legal
Formerly president of the Tenement Museum, Kevin’s LGBT contributions began in 1988, when he helped students create the first school-based Gay-Straight Alliance club, leading him to found and lead the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) for 18 years. He then served as an Assistant Secretary of Education for President Obama, after which he led the Arcus Foundation, the world’s largest foundation for LGBT rights organizations, for 5 years. He has received several awards, both national and international recognition, is the author of seven books (including Mama’s Boy, Preacher’s Son: A Memoir) and a documentary producer (Out of the Past, The Lavender Scare). Kevin is actively engaged in nonprofit and community causes. He has a BA from Harvard College, an MA in Education from Columbia University’s Teachers College, and an MBA from NYU’s Stern School of Business.
Sarah Kate Ellis President & CEO GLAAD
Sarah Kate Ellis is the President and CEO of GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization. Ellis leads GLAAD’s advocacy to accelerate acceptance of the LGBTQ community through compelling and effective campaigns and programs. Most recently, she spoke on LGBTQ issues at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos. Prior to GLAAD, Ellis was an award-winning media executive who grew and transformed brands including Real Simple.
