Argentina becomes latest country to join U.S. State Department’s Global Equality Fund

The White House and U.S. Department of State have announced that Argentina will be the latest nation to join the Global Equality Fund, a U.S.-led initiative that works to promote the rights of LGBTI people across the world.

The announcement was made to coincide with President Obama’s official visit to the country this week.  Argentina has some of the world’s most progressive laws addressing LGBT rights.  LGBT Argentinians can enter into same-sex marriages, and trans people can legally change their gender without having to undergo surgery, among other protections.

Argentina is the third Latin American country to join the Fund, following Chile and Uruguay.  The Fund has donated more than $17 million to LGBT advocacy organizations across the world since it was founded in 2011.
