UNESCO has released a report detailing LGBT bullying in Asian education systems. While some strides have been made to address homophobic and transphobic bullying in schools, overall the situation is disheartening.
In 2013, the Phillipines passed legislation to address bullying in schools specifically along sexual identity and gender identity lines, a unique bright spot outlined by the report.
LGBT students in most other countries, however, have not received the same support. While a number of Asian nations outlaw homosexuality and thus lend official credence to the idea LGBT people can be discriminated against, many governments have simply failed to address widespread classroom bullying against LGBT youth. South Korea has even gone so far as to ban discussion of homosexuality in sex education classes.
