Public opinion toward LGBT community gradually improving in China

Public opposition to LGBT people is softening in China, according to a new report from the United Nations Development Programme.  The study also revealed, however, that the vast majority of lesbian, gay, and bisexual people in the country have not come out to their friends and families or in the workplace.

According to a survey conducted in conjunction with the study, only 30% of respondents stated that they would not accept a child who was lesbian, gay, or bisexual.  However, the UNDP warned that this number might reflect some bias towards a more-accepting sample of respondents.  More than 70% of respondents stated that they would not accept trans or intersex children.  This arguably helps to explain why only 15% of LGBT respondents are out to their friends or families, and only 5% publicly.

Encouragingly, since 2012 the number of appearances of LGBT issues in the Chinese media has increased from 356 to 867. And according to the China Rainbow Media Awards reports on LGBT issues are more objective than was previously the case. Visibility, however, is still disproportionately very low.
