A record number of openly LGBT+ people will compete in the Rio Olympics

The number of openly LGBT+ competitors in the XXXI Olympiad, which will hold its opening ceremony tonight in Rio de Janeiro, is nearly twice the number who competed in London in 2012, Outsports reports.

The list may grow as the games go on, as it has in previous Olympics.

Notable names among the cohort include Tom Daley (Great Britain, diving), Brittney Griner (USA, basketball), and Megan Rapinoe (USA, soccer). Helen Richardson-Walsh and Kate Richardson-Walsh, a married couple of British field hockey players, will also compete.
