As Egypt’s security forces continue their crackdown on the LGBT+ community in the aftermath of a rainbow flag being raised at a Mashrou’ Leila concert last month, U.S.-based dating apps including Grindr and Hornet are providing Egyptian users with safety tips in Arabic.
More than 70 people have been arrested in the crackdown. Amnesty International told Reuters that some people who have been arrested were “entrapped” via dating apps.
“We know that the police are under pressure to arrest people and they are going about doing that through all the avenues that they have,” Jack Harrison-Quintana, a director at Grindr, told Reuters.
Grindr is suggesting that users in Egypt notify friends about their plans before meeting someone, among other precautions.
